Welcome back to Wooly Plays for another Hero of the Week post! This week’s hero is…
Age: 31 (biological), approximately 40 (chronological)
Occupation: Climatologist, Adventurer
Base: Xi’an, China (formerly)
Affiliation: Overwatch (formerly)
Mei is a climatologist who studies abnormal climate phenomena and their effects on ecosystems around the world. She was a member of Overwatch’s ecopoint initiative, which was created to find a solution to the planet’s escalating and unexplained climate changes. Mei was assigned to Ecopoint: Antarctica when disaster struck.
An extremely powerful polar storm struck the ecopoint and cut the scientists off from the outside world. With the facility damaged, supplies dwindling, and little hope for survival, the scientists entered cryostasis in an effort to survive until rescue came. Unfortunately, that rescue attempt never came. Years passed before the team’s cryogenic chamber was discovered.
Mei was the only survivor, and any clues that she and her team had uncovered were lost.
She decided to continue her work on her own, and she travels around the world in hopes of restoring the eco-network and tracking down the causes of the threats to the planet’s ecosystems.

What’s Wooly’s Opinion?
My Current Play Time With Mei: 12 hours
I feel like much of the Overwatch community will agree when I say that Mei is a menace. Unfortunately, she is also extremely fun to play. I’ve been playing her a little more recently, and I’ve been delighting in the horror of other players as I freeze them solid, stare them blankly in the eyes, and shoot an icicle straight into their face. I especially enjoy putting walls behind people who are backing up, so they have nowhere to go and have to face the cold embrace of death. It’s horrific.
But dammit I love it.
Tips and Tricks
Use the Ice Wall for Movement
While using Mei’s ice wall for impeding the enemy team can work well, you can also use it to give yourself a height advantage over the enemy team! They won’t expect a blizzard (and murder) to come down from above them.
Lead Your Icicle Shots
This goes for any projectile-based hero: lead your shots! Mei’s gun has a bit of downtime in between when you press the button and when your icicle actually ejects from the gun, so try to take that into consideration while shooting with your M2 or whichever button it is on console. I like to try to flick-shot, and most of the time it works!
Keep Her at a Distance
When I play Mercy, I try my best to stay out of her 10 meter radius so that I won’t fall victim to her endothermic blaster. If you do find yourself in that radius, kill her or get away quickly. Freezing you only gives her allies time to kill you, but she doesn’t need them. She will look at you with her unfeeling eyes and gun you down. With ice.
It’s not a good time.
Strafe, Don’t Jump
Jumping often makes you vulnerable, and Mei’s attacks are no exception! Instead, strafe left or right. The Mei will have to try and decide when and where you’ll be when her shot gets to you, and that leaves room for error (and hopefully less terror for you)
Mei checking out!
Thank you SO so much for reading! As usual, comment below with any tips and tricks you think I may have missed, or even if you disagree with some of mine! I’m always happy to hear opinions!
